Is San Miguel de Allende Safe?
San Miguel is one of the safest cities in Mexico. Because San Miguel is a colonial city, the historic center has an open and easy-to-navigate grid pattern with virtually no unsafe areas. Even at night, we have never felt unsafe wandering the charming cobblestone streets of San Miguel. In fact, the city’s many plazas (like El Jardín) come alive at night with gatherings for live music and spectacular performances. With that said, please practice common sense when traveling anywhere and keep your valuables close to you. If you feel unsafe walking back to your hotel at any time, Uber and taxi are both reliable options in San Miguel.
Do I need to speak Spanish in San Miguel?
The majority of San Miguel locals are multilingual, and many speak English proficiently due to the large number of American expats living in San Miguel. You should be able to converse in English with most restaurant and hotel staff. That said, dusting up on your Spanish won’t hurt, and locals appreciate the effort!
